Speeding was a contributing factor in 30 percent of all fatal crashes in 1999. While preventing accidents is the number one benefit of reducing your speed, a recent report by the the Governors Highway Safety Association has announced that there are five important benefits of slowing down while driving.

1. Slowing down saves lives, including your own! Reducing your speed greatly increases the likelihood of surviving a crash. One researcher had found that a 1% decrease in your traveling speed reduces your crash injury likelihood by 2%, serious injuries are reduced by 3% and fatalities in crashed drop by 4%. These percentages may sound small, but remember, only a 1% decrease in speed will usually be less than 1 mph. Imagine dropping your speed by 10 mph and the numbers prove much more substantial. In 2006, over 13,500 people died in speeding-related accidents. Each accident could have been prevented by slowing down.

2. You save money– Speeding reduces fuel efficiency, which causes you to need to fuel up more often. The Department of Energy estimates that drivers should assume that each 5 mph they drive over 60 mph is equivalent to paying an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas. For people always on the road, this can make a significant difference in your monthly gas budget.

3. Slowing down saves the environment– As we now know, driving faster consumes more gas. More fuel consumed means more CO2 released into the atmosphere. According to the Ford Motor Company, driving at 65 mph consumes almost 15% more fuel than driving just 10pmh less at 55 mph.

4. You save MORE money– Speeding is the easiest way to get yourself a ticket. Because speeding can lead to unnecessary death and injury, highway safety and law enforcement target speeders on the roads. If the pennies saved in gasoline don’t appeal to you, you average speeding ticket costs $150 for a one-time offense; an unnecessary and unplanned expense. Also, if you are at fault in an accident, most insurance premiums will increase, if they decide to continue your coverage at all.

5. You can save your license– Often times, the repeat-offender speeders don’t take the smaller benefits of slowing down into consideration. For that exact reason, law enforcement can suspend your license for too many points on your driving record. Taking classes to remove points can take more time and money away from you and accumulating points can hurt your insurance premiums.

Slowing down is really the answer. Not only can you help prevent serious and even fatal accidents, but you are saving your wallet, license, and the environment. As a highly experienced Waco and Killeen personal injury attorney, I can tell you that safe driving habits can help prevent collisions. Slowing down helps you remain alert and aware of your conditions and can help to prevent any unnecessary injuries.
