Car accidents happen very often. The damage can be simple damage on the vehicle’s fender but there are more serious ones, including human injuries and fatalities. If you are a driver, be responsible in making sure that you observe all safety precautions to avoid car accidents, particularly complying with all traffic laws, avoiding driving when under the influence of alcohol or substance, as well as when you feel sluggish or sick.

Relevant Figures

According to the National Highway Safety Administration, most number of cases happens at night. The highest number of car accidents occurred in California, followed by Texas, Georgia, New York, Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee.

What are the effects of car accidents?

While there are some car accidents that only result to property damages, there are circumstances when a car accident leads to a victim’s physical injuries, temporary, and permanent disability. This can range from minor cuts, scratches and abrasions, to the extent of head and brain damages, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, requiring surgery and medication. Permanent disability is a major effect of a car accident – where the victim of the car accident will be unable to work and might require a lifetime of nursing care. To a greater extent, car accidents can lead to a person’s death.

How do drivers avoid car accidents?

First of all, drivers should always comply with all traffic rules and regulations. Be conscious about your speed limit, and observe and follow all traffic signs (yield, no passing, and stop signs). Traffic signs are created for keeping everyone’s safe while on the road.

Secondly, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and substance. When you drive under this circumstance, your judgment and time to react in a situation is slower than normal. This can get you into an accident.

Finally, make sure that you are fully rested before you drive. Like driving when impaired, if you are sluggish or sick (and just took medication), your level of alertness decreases and your assessment of road situations is distorted.
